National Reading Month
19 June - 18 July 2017

The annual remembrance day of P N Panicker on 19th June is observed as the ‘Day of Reading’ by the Govt. of Kerala for the past 21 years with week-long activities at schools and public institutions to honour the contribution of P N Panicker to the cause of literacy and education and propagating the message of ‘Reading for Inclusive Growth’.

From the overwhelming response of the public and stakeholders from many states, the Foundation as part of its Silver Jubilee Celebrations is observing 19th June to 18th July 2017 as "Reading Month" across many states of the country from this year.

The Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri. Narendra Modiji inaugurated 22nd National Reading Day-Reading Month Celebration at Kochi on17th June 2017 and paid rich tributes to the efforts of P.N. Panicker Foundation in making the country to achieve inclusive education.

The Prime Minister in his popular programme had also exhorted to emulate the practice of P.N. Panicker Foundation of presenting books instead of bouquet as welcome gift for functions and ceremonies.

Update on Reading Month

Pune

A debate on book reading & its usefulness being organized at Pune Marathi Granthalay. An engaging session with a lot of points and counter points being expressed. An introspective session wherein each of the participating audience was evaluating himself/herself as a reader in the technology era.

Coimbatore

Story telling programme for children and parents was conducted by Coimbatore Branch Library as part of National Reading Month celebrations under the leadership of Librarian Mr K Vijayan. Drama on the theme of Water saving and Save plants was also conducted which raised immense interest and inquisitiveness among the participating audience.

Jammu & Kashmir

Reading month celebrations organized by Department of Libraries and Research, Jammu & Kashmir in which Librarians from various Central and District Libraries of Kashmir and Ladakh conducted interesting and engaging activities for promoting reading habits.

Delhi

As a part of National Reading Month Celebration, Delhi Public Library has been organizing different activities in its various service units, for the promotion of reading among people. At the Zonal library, DPL Sarojini Nagar, a storytelling session for the youth, painting competition and storytelling session for the children were also conducted.

Chandigarh

T.S. Central State Library Chandigarh is organising a series of activities in the Library, Old age homes, Nari Niketan, Schools, Prison and other places as part of the National Reading Month Celebrations under the active Leadership of Dr Neeza Singh, Librarian. Pune

Book Donation campaign to the drivers and conductors of Pune - Pimpri Local Bus Transport Corporation was arranged by PUNE MARATHI GRANTHALAY. Around 350 staff - members of PMPML will get benefitted by the scheme. Vice President of Granthalaya - Mr.Dilip Thakar and Joint Secretary Mr.Sudhir Inamdar handed over the books to Mr Sanjay Gaikwad of PMPML. Librarians Mrs Sanjeevani Atre and Mrs Lalita Moskar of Granthalaya were present at the function and thanks to their commendable efforts, many such activities are being planned in future. The Book donation campaign was arranged in response to the appeal made by Hon. Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, while inaugurating the National Reading Day- National Reading Month celebrations on 17th June 2017.
